The trailer-securing decision

A powered hook-style restraint can engage a trailer’s rear impact guard, or RIG, while a wheel-style restraint may capture a wheel or another manufacturer-defined target. What a provider typically evaluates

The provider starts with the bay number, trailer presence, restraint style, RIG or wheel target, door and leveler relationship, signals, fault code, and access. State whether loading or unloading is underway and whether the facility has stopped the affected operation. A control-box indication is not a substitute for evaluating physical engagement.

The review can include hook or wheel assembly, pivot or arm, actuator, target geometry, sensors, limit switches, wiring, controller, control box, lights, alarm, door interlock, leveler interlock, impact, and corrosion. Trailer position and RIG condition may affect the evaluation.

Powered restraint service requires provider isolation and lockout/tagout under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147; facility personnel should not bypass a safety function.

Why an “engaged” signal must agree with reality

A restraint that reports engaged when the hook has not captured the RIG, or when a wheel arm has not captured the intended target, can create a dangerous mismatch between a display and the loading condition. Treat the disagreement as a stop-use signal for the affected loading process and report it clearly. Do not move a trailer to test a questionable signal, enter the gap, defeat the interlock, or reset a fault repeatedly.

Repair versus replacement factors
