What the two-part drop test is intended to observe

A drop test is not simply watching a curtain move. DASMA Technical Data Sheet 271 describes a first drop test for complete closure, with the door resting on the sill or floor; the closing device is reset according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then a second drop test verifies that the automatic closing device was properly reset. The provider documents both results and confirms alarm, access, traffic, and occupancy boundaries before testing.

DASMA Technical Data Sheet 271 states that the applicable rolling fire-door average closing speed must be at least 6 inches per second and no more than 24 inches per second. This is not permission to adjust a door without qualified service. When applicable, the provider records the method and result, and the facility keeps the record available to the AHJ. What a provider typically does on site

The provider confirms facility, opening, label, door type, release device, reason for the visit, and whether an alarm or accidental release caused the drop. The plan accounts for people, vehicles, fire-protection coordination, access, and AHJ notification. The provider explains the boundary; staff should not release a door as an experiment.

The provider observes operation and full closure, including curtain, guides, bottom bar, floor contact, closing behavior, and release device. Where applicable, it records speed by the required method described in DASMA Technical Data Sheet 271; the provider and AHJ confirm applicability.

The provider verifies reset and records whether the door returns ready. If it fails closure, a criterion, reset, or shows damage, the provider explains the next step rather than calling the test a pass. Request a written record for the AHJ.

What a failed test means

A failed test requires correction, not repeated drops until the result changes. The provider may identify a release device, fusible link, guide, curtain, bottom-bar, closing assembly, speed, record, or reset issue. The facility asks what remains unavailable and what temporary control procedures require.

Repair versus replacement depends on label, curtain and guide condition, release device, closing assembly, compatibility, damage, corrosion, modifications, and whether the assembly can be restored within its listed configuration. Replacement may require AHJ and owner coordination; the provider and AHJ determine whether the restored assembly meets applicable requirements.

What to report before calling
