Dock Plate, Dock Board & Edge-of-Dock Repair in St. Louis

Portable-bridge and edge-of-dock service is for commercial warehouses, distribution centers, manufacturing plants, and cold-storage facilities in the St. Louis metro.

Independent service-request website. Calls may be shared with a third-party commercial dock and door provider. The provider confirms capability, availability, timing, pricing, and terms.

Describe the equipment and its condition

A dock plate that has a bent lip and a dock board with a missing or damaged leg require different information from a mounted pit leveler. Call 314-804-7278 with the equipment type, rated capacity or load class, curb-to-bed height difference, and dock position; a third-party provider confirms capability, availability, timing, and pricing. Commercial requests from Earth City, Hazelwood, St. Peters, Fenton, Edwardsville, Granite City, or other local corridors may be reviewed by address. Residential lake docks, marine structures, and do-it-yourself plate modifications are outside scope.

01

Portable plate, dock board, or edge-of-dock leveler

A portable dock plate is commonly a lighter bridge for pallet-jack or limited traffic, while a dock board is a more substantial portable bridge intended for powered-industrial-truck loading within its marked capacity and configuration. Terminology varies by manufacturer and facility, so the data plate, identification marking, handles, legs, and lip shape matter more than a name used on a shipping document. An edge-of-dock leveler is mounted at the dock face and is not carried into position. A pit leveler is a separate configuration covered by Dock Leveler Repair.

The request should identify whether portable equipment, an edge-of-dock mechanism, or a mounted pit leveler is the real subject. A photograph cannot establish that a plate is safe. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.26 addresses dockboards, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 addresses powered-industrial-truck operations; the facility and provider determine the procedure for the specific equipment.

  • In scope: portable steel or aluminum dock plates, dock boards with legs, handles and lip bevels, and mounted edge-of-dock levelers at commercial truck positions.
  • Report: marking or data plate, capacity language, load class, plate dimensions, leg condition, lip condition, height difference, and the truck or pallet equipment crossing it.
  • Out of scope: residential, marina, barge, floating, or lake docks; forklift repair; fabrication instructions; welding or straightening guidance; and parts-only requests.

Observable conditions to describe

Do not put a damaged plate back into service to gather more information. Keep the wording observational: the provider can assess whether deformation, missing identification, or an uncertain rating calls for removal from service, repair, or replacement.

What a provider evaluates, in order

The provider begins with the facility address, position, equipment identity, recent event, traffic type, and loading status. The review establishes whether the bridge is portable or mounted, then compares its marking with the equipment crossing it. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.26 provides the dockboard reference, while OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 addresses powered-industrial-truck considerations.

The review may include deck, underside, lip bevel, legs, handles, fasteners, identification, corrosion, impact, and the curb-to-bed interface. For a mounted edge-of-dock unit, the provider distinguishes its platform and controls from a portable bridge. Do not climb under or modify damaged equipment.

04

When replacement may be the better path

A provider may consider a repair when the identity and rating are clear, damage is limited to a serviceable component, support geometry remains intact, and the restored unit can be evaluated against manufacturer requirements. Replacement becomes more likely when the plate or board is cracked, permanently deformed, corroded through, missing its identification, missing a structural leg, or outside the known rating. A field straightening or welded patch can change the load path, so the service does not recommend one.

A capacity rating is not simply the weight of a shipment. It is tied to the equipment, wheel loads, dimensions, traffic, and manufacturer-defined conditions. Report whether a pallet jack, counterbalanced forklift, reach truck, or another vehicle crosses the bridge without guessing a new rating.

A move from portable equipment to an edge-of-dock or pit leveler may make sense when trailer heights vary, traffic is frequent, or portable handling is burdensome. Dock height, structure, pit feasibility, throughput, sanitation, and capital scope still control the comparison.

05

Cost drivers without an invented figure

The quote can vary with plate or board material, dimensions, marked capacity, damage location, replacement hardware, corrosion, identification work, edge-of-dock mechanism type, access, traffic interruption, and whether the dock face or approach also needs attention. A replacement unit may require different handling from a field-service component. Height and load-class uncertainty can add evaluation time because the provider cannot responsibly assume a rating.

06

What the caller should report

Start with facility name, address, municipality, county, state, dock position, and whether freight is blocked. Name portable dock plate, dock board, edge-of-dock leveler, or unknown. Describe two symptoms if both exist, such as a bent lip plus a missing leg, and mention any lift-truck impact.

Read the data plate or capacity marking if it is safely visible. Report dimensions, material if known, load class, leg count, handle condition, lip bevel, trailer height difference, and the equipment that crosses the bridge. Include photos only through the provider’s approved process; never walk into a live loading path or under a suspended bridge to obtain one.

Have access rules, receiving hours, authorizing contact, purchase-order process, and any vehicle restrictions ready. If the rating is uncertain or structural damage is visible, tell operations to keep the unit out of normal traffic while a provider or manufacturer evaluates it.

07

Confirming the request

The request can be shared with a third-party provider, who confirms address, equipment category, access, availability, and scope. Ask whether it distinguishes a dock board from a mounted edge-of-dock leveler and can review the marked capacity.

The 30-Second Call

Have these 5 things ready

  • 1Facility name, address, and municipality (MO or IL side)
  • 2The equipment (leveler, sectional door, high-speed, restraint, etc.)
  • 3What it is doing (won't raise, off track, stuck, fault light)
  • 4The position number, and whether it is blocking freight
  • 5Brand/model from the data plate if readable, plus receiving hours

Before you call

Questions from facility teams.

01

What is the difference between a dock plate and a dock board?

Names vary, but a dock plate is generally a portable bridge for lighter or limited traffic, while a dock board commonly has support legs and is intended for powered-industrial-truck loading within its marked limits. The data plate, legs, dimensions, and actual traffic matter more than the label used at a facility.

02

Can a bent dock plate be straightened and returned to service?

Do not assume that a bent, cracked, or deformed bridge can be field-straightened. A provider or manufacturer may recommend removal from service or replacement when the load path, identification, or rating is uncertain.

03

When should a facility consider an edge-of-dock or pit leveler?

A mounted leveler may deserve comparison when trailer height varies, portable handling is burdensome, or loading frequency makes a portable bridge impractical. A provider must consider dock structure, interface, traffic, and manufacturer requirements rather than applying a universal threshold.

04

What capacity information should I give the provider?

Read the marked capacity and load-class wording, then describe the vehicle, wheel loads, and typical freight. Do not invent a rating from dimensions or assume that a neighboring bridge has the same limits.
