What are the key commercial door handing facts?
For a handed closer under Allegion’s published convention, a right hand reverse door uses a left hand closer. A left hand reverse door uses a right hand closer. That makes two of the four mappings an inversion, not a measured error rate: this commercial door handing chart gives you both the door label and the scoped closer label. How do you read the four hands in this commercial door handing chart?
The four single-leaf conditions covered here are left hand (LH), right hand (RH), left hand reverse (LHR) and right hand reverse (RHR). Read them from the designated reference side, using hinge position and whether the leaf swings away from you or toward you. The table below reconciles Allegion’s four labels with Imperial USA’s reverse-bevel aliases; it does not cover every special door arrangement. Sources: Allegion and Imperial USA.
Fix the reference side before you read the chart
Handing is ambiguous until you agree on where the observer stands. For this chart, stand on the designated outside or key side—the side from which keyed entry would be controlled. Here, “secure side” means that key-side reference; it does not mean the protected room on the other face. That distinction is stated in Allegion’s Handing 101.
An exterior wall is not required. An interior storeroom can have a key side even though both faces are indoors. For a passage opening without a key, use the outside/reference side established for the opening rather than silently substituting a different observer position. Reeb and Beacon likewise make the key-side reference explicit.
Once that side is fixed, record two facts: which jamb carries the hinges, and whether the leaf travels away from you or toward you. Do not change viewpoints between recording the hinges and recording the swing. “Hinges on the left” alone is not a four-hand designation.

The reverse conditions are where the labels stop matching the closer labels. A reverse door moves toward the observer on the designated key side. That is a statement about geometry and viewpoint—not, by itself, a finding about whether the door’s swing satisfies an egress requirement.
The code table answers a different question: when a covered door must swing in the direction of travel. Neither the occupant-load threshold nor the word “exit” selects the left or right hinge jamb. Keep those decisions separate in the record.
LHR or LHRB? Both, depending on who printed the chart
In the cited charts, LHR and LHRB describe matching hinge-and-swing geometry. So do RHR and RHRB. The difference is the added B for bevel, not an extra fifth or sixth standard single-door hand. Imperial USA uses the B suffix; Allegion’s reference sheet uses LHR and RHR.
That alias does not supply a bevel angle, a glazing orientation or permission to reverse a manufactured assembly. It is a translation between the labels in these records. Preserve the manufacturer’s exact catalog designation when a specification calls for one, and attach the reference-side information that makes the translation reproducible.

Why does a right hand reverse door take a left hand closer?
Under Allegion’s cited convention, the door designation is read from the key side and the handed closer can be identified from the push side. Those are opposite faces on a reverse opening, so the left/right result flips. This explains the published RHR-to-LH and LHR-to-RH mappings; it does not establish a universal order code for every closer. Allegion.
A chart that gives you four door labels has answered the door-label question. It has not yet identified the closer model, arm, cover or mounting arrangement. That is why the two-label closer result belongs beside the four-label door result rather than replacing it.

The two non-reverse conditions do not flip: the key side and push side are the same face. The reverse conditions do flip. Two of four mappings is the complete denominator behind the headline finding. It says nothing about the proportion of installed openings that are reverse or the frequency of wrong-part orders.
The push-side shortcut answers a different question
Allegion’s knowledge-base page includes key-side, push-side and pull-side instructions. Its final paragraph explicitly introduces the push-side instruction as a way to determine a door closer’s hand. The page therefore does identify that component distinction; it would be inaccurate to say the manufacturer never explains it. Allegion.
Work through the geometry as a paper example. An LHR opening has its hinges on the left and swings toward an observer on the key side. Its push face is opposite that observer. From the push face, the same hinge jamb appears on the right. The key-side classification is LHR; the push-side left/right result is RH.
Those are not competing measurements. They are labels produced by different reference rules. The mistake would be writing RH in the door-hand field when the intended four-hand system requires LHR, or treating RH as proof that a particular closer assembly is suitable.
This derivation uses the verified four-case records and reverses the viewing face. It is our explanation of the geometry, not a quotation from Allegion and not a claim that the manufacturer reports an ordering-error rate. The opening record below keeps the door label and component labels in separate fields for exactly this reason.
How are double doors handed when one leaf is active?
For a conventional pair with both leaves swinging the same direction and one identified active leaf, the published notation adds A to that active leaf’s hand. The four results are LHA, RHA, LHRA and RHRA. This table does not classify pairs with both leaves active or leaves swinging in opposite directions. Allegion’s Handing 101 and Trudoor.
Identify the active leaf before using left or right. The active leaf carries the operative lock/latch in the arrangement described by the cited reference; the other leaf is commonly secured with flush bolts. A drawing’s left leaf is not automatically its active leaf. Imperial USA also publishes separate active-pair arrangements.

Both-active and double-egress pairs need their own record
Some pairs have no inactive leaf. Trudoor illustrates push-pull pairs, pairs with surface vertical rod exit devices on both leaves, and pairs with rim devices against a removable mullion. Those arrangements cannot be reduced to a table that requires one inactive and one active leaf. Trudoor’s paired-door reference.
Double-egress pairs are a separate case: the two leaves swing in opposite directions. The opening, frame and exit-hardware notation need their own scope; they are not automatically interchangeable. Hager’s 5100 documentation lists Double Egress Hold Open Track Arm and Double Egress Non-Hold Open Track Arm options. Their presence in the catalog demonstrates a separately documented configuration, not universal compatibility with every double-egress opening. Where do the published handing references disagree?
The comparison contains 16 selected reference records, including charts, a technical-manual excerpt, a residential/commercial comparison and an ANSI/BHMA scope reference. We recorded viewpoint instructions, terminology, abbreviations, pair coverage, format and verification depth. The records show why a label must travel with its reference rule; they are not 16 independent publishers or a census of all available charts.

A blank terminology array in the download means that no generic term was assigned from the inspected material. It does not mean the publisher never uses such a term anywhere. “Not evaluated” in a pair field is likewise not evidence that a publisher has no paired-door guidance.
Five instruction formulations—not five distinct physical sides
The recorded instructions normalize to five formulations: outside/security/key side; push side with hinge position; pull side with hinge position; back against the hinge side; and pull side with knob position. The last two pull-side descriptions differ in the feature the observer reads, not necessarily in where that observer is physically located. This is an editorial coding of the recorded wording, not five industry standards.
Three formulations appear in Allegion’s knowledge-base article. CDF and CDI also describe a back-to-hinges approach. BROSCO’s residential instruction uses the pull side and knob position, but that same BROSCO page also supplies a commercial chart with reverse hands. The comparison does not endorse every shortcut as a complete four-hand test. A method that returns only left or right has not, on its own, supplied the reverse condition. Pair status and component scope remain additional inputs rather than hidden assumptions.
Five recorded names for non-reverse, four for reverse
The non-reverse terminology field contains straight hand, regular hand, standard swing, standard bevel and standard handing. The reverse field contains reverse, reverse swing, reverse bevel and reverse handing. These are distinct text values in this compilation; case and surrounding punctuation are normalized, while different words remain different values.
Allegion’s knowledge base supplies straight hand and reverse swing. Imperial USA supplies regular hand and reverse bevel. Beacon supplies standard swing/standard bevel and reverse swing/reverse bevel. CDF adds standard handing and reverse handing. Those primary records support the complete five-and-four count without depending on unseen pages of the Steelcraft manual. Sources: S03, S11, S13 and S14 in the source register.
The Steelcraft excerpt independently records regular hand and reverse swing; Allegion’s quick-reference sheet uses reverse. That is variation within related documentation, not evidence that one word is the only valid description. The diagrams and observer rule settle the geometry; the words document how a particular publisher expresses it.
This count deliberately excludes full labels such as “right hand reverse bevel,” product names and every word in a user comment. Changing that coding rule would change the count. The exported arrays and build script make the rule inspectable instead of leaving the headline number to interpretation.
One live chart has a mismatched caption
QualityDoor.com’s LH panel contains a specific internal conflict: “Right Hand Reverse” appears in its written-out caption while its abbreviation is LH and its adjacent geometry describes left hinges with an inward swing. The abbreviation and geometry agree with a left-hand condition under that page’s outside-reference rule. The written-out caption does not. QualityDoor.com, checked September 14, 2026.

The point is not that every published chart is unreliable. It is that a picture, abbreviation and written label should be checked against each other. The shared wording visible on distributor charts does not establish who wrote a passage first, who copied whom, or whether this error propagated. This compilation makes none of those claims.
There is a second documented wording conflict worth keeping separate. Special-Lite’s reference-position paragraph associates toward/away motion with inswing/outswing terms differently from its later single-door descriptions. Which door hardware is actually handed?
Handing is not one property shared by every component of an opening. Under the cited records, a door can be RHR, its handed closer LH, a lock chassis non-handed and a closer cover handed. The useful question is therefore which component, from which manufacturer, under which document? Allegion’s component comparison and Schlage’s ND specifications.
One closer, four component fields

Two findings fall out of that table. The 4010 and 4020 are described as sharing a closer body, but their plastic-cover handing differs. All four listed series have handed metal covers, including the non-handed 4040XP. The manufacturer’s comparison supports both findings; it does not establish a universal explanation for why every cover is designed that way.
Allegion separately states that the 4010 is handed and not field reversible. That is a model-specific restriction, not a basis for classifying every handed closer as irreversible. Allegion’s 4010 answer.
For contrast, Hager lists the 5100 Series Grade 1 surface closer as non-handed, with adjustable sizes 1 through 6 and its stated BHMA/ANSI A156.4 certification. The same company page lists a St. Louis address, 139 Victor Street, Saint Louis, Missouri. That is a local manufacturer reference—not a claim that handing conventions change at the Missouri border. The separate fields are the point. Reading “non-handed” in the body field cannot fill in the arm or cover fields. Nor does the existence of handed accessories turn a manufacturer’s non-handed-body statement into an error. Both statements can be true at the same time.
When a non-handed lock preparation stops answering the whole question
A cylindrical lock preparation and a completed door assembly are not the same object. Allegion’s explanation pairs LH with RHR and RH with LHR for the matching cylindrical preparation. Schlage independently describes the ND Series chassis as non-handed. Neither statement determines every other opening component. Allegion’s preparation discussion and Schlage ND.
Add glazing, a sidelite or a louver and an additional orientation can matter. SDI 111C-24 places detachable louver moldings on the room/non-security side and notes that a louver in a nonhanded door can require reversal to suit the actual hand. That is a documented louver condition—not a statement that every glazed door is a different product whenever its swing changes. SDI 111C and 111J.
SDI 111J-25 addresses non-labeled exterior glazing. For a lite kit, record the manufacturer’s glazing-system details rather than copying the louver rule into a universal glazing rule. The glass, stop, door and frame are separate specification items. A symmetric bored-lock preparation is not proof that the complete glazed opening can be turned around.

The Von Duprin row preserves a verified copyright-2004 catalog example, specifically the 9875-F/9975-F fire-exit device. Its -2 and SS exceptions cannot be silently promoted into a current rule for every 9975 variant. Likewise, the SARGENT row is the October 2021, function-42 record—not a statement that all mortise locks or all current 8200 functions share that restriction.
These historical examples are kept because they expose a useful specification problem: a model family, a function and an option can carry different restrictions. Their dates are part of the fact, not a footnote that can be discarded when the fact is reused.
Four manufacturers can publish different handing treatments within the exit-device category without any contradiction in the underlying chart. The device body, order configuration and outside trim are different objects. “Is a rim exit device handed?” therefore needs a manufacturer and model before it has a dependable product-level answer.

When does the building code determine the swing direction?
The IBC’s direction-of-swing provision requires covered doors to swing in the direction of egress travel at an occupant load of 50 or more, or for Group H occupancy, within the section’s scope. That rule does not choose the left or right hinge jamb, and it does not define the key-side observer. A reverse label follows only when the required swing moves toward the observer on the designated reference side. ICC’s 2021 and 2024 provisions.
The threshold is a swing-direction rule, not a universal panic-hardware trigger. This table records a narrow piece of model-code history. It does not determine whether a specific project falls under a particular edition, an exception, an existing-building provision or a local amendment.

The consequential history correction is straightforward: the 2012 text already refers to a room or area containing the occupant load. That wording was not first introduced when the section became 1010.1.2.1 in 2015. The 2009 record uses the earlier door-serving-load formulation. ICC 2012 §1008.1.2 and ICC 2009 Chapter 10.
A bare reference to 1008.1.2 therefore does not prove a specification is wrong; it may refer to an earlier edition. Conversely, finding the newer section number does not establish that its edition was adopted for the project. Record the code name, year and section together, rather than converting a section number without preserving its edition.
Balanced doors are expressly included in the inspected 2021 wording. This compilation does not assign a first-ever introduction date for that term across every code publication, supplement or amendment. Which swing-rule reference applies on each side of the Mississippi?
The code reference must follow the adopting jurisdiction and the project’s scope, not the website’s home city. The City of St. Louis publishes a 2018 IBC adoption; St. Louis County identifies its building code as 2015 IBC with amendments. Illinois’s framework effective January 1, 2025 also distinguishes covered work without a locally adopted code from jurisdictions that have adopted their own codes. The City of St. Louis is an independent city, not part of St. Louis County. Its ordinances cannot simply be assigned to a county municipality because the project’s postal address includes “St. Louis.” The City itself identifies the County as a separate government. City government structure.
The County’s published adoption record is Ordinance 27,654, approved December 18, 2019, with the convenience copy identifying an April 1, 2020 effective date. That copy expressly calls itself unofficial. The current County index and the adoption text are used together; neither establishes a uniform code for every municipality without checking the applicable adoption and administrative arrangement. The Missouri professional-conduct rule is narrower than a statewide building-code adoption. 20 CSR 2030-2.040 gives the licensing board a 2018 IBC evaluation criterion when no local building code exists. It does not, by its own terms, turn this ledger into a statewide permit determination. This page makes no claim that every building type is free of other statewide requirements. Illinois needs two statutory references, not one. The Capital Development Board places the no-local-code and state-funded framework under 20 ILCS 3105/10.09-1, using the current or immediately preceding IBC/IEBC edition for covered work, with the scope and exclusions stated by the agency. Its separate explanation of 10.18 concerns the minimum structural provisions for locally adopted codes. Can the hand of a fire-rated door be changed?
Not on the authority of a handing chart. A proposed change must be assessed against the actual listed assembly, the manufacturer’s instructions and the applicable requirements. Intertek’s published guidance calls for listing-agency review of modifications beyond allowed job-site preparations, with manufacturer consultation before field changes. The distinction is between an allowed preparation and a modification that needs further evaluation—not between a convenient change and an inconvenient one. A different hand can involve the door, frame, hardware and glazing configuration. This page cannot determine whether the exact proposed change is permitted from the letters LH, RH, LHR or RHR alone.
Intertek describes possible outcomes including an engineering evaluation, additional testing, a field visit or replacement of the affected component. It does not say that every handing question automatically requires a new assembly. The manufacturer and the listing laboratory named on the certification must evaluate the proposed configuration; the authority having jurisdiction determines acceptance for the project. Two label points also need to remain separate. First, an illegible or missing label is an identification and acceptance issue that needs resolution; a chart cannot restore it. Second, paint on a label does not automatically erase a rating: UL specifically permits paint on an embossed fire-door-frame label when the required information remains legible. Closing and latching performance cannot be inferred from a legible label alone. A listed configuration still has to function as required; the Intertek guidance identifies component and clearance defects that can prevent proper closing or latching. “No protection whatsoever” is not a measured conclusion this reference can assign to an uninspected opening.
This is work for the manufacturer, the listing laboratory and the authority having jurisdiction. The record below captures identification and documents; it is not a set of instructions for rehanding, drilling, machining, moving hardware or altering a fire-door assembly.
What should an opening record capture?
Record the inputs, not just the conclusion. A second reader should be able to reconstruct the reference side, hinge position, travel direction and component scope without guessing where the first observer stood. The blank record below is an organization aid derived from the fields used in this compilation.

The record does not replace an approved door schedule, a hardware submittal or a professional assessment. Nor does filling it out certify a product’s listing or a project’s code compliance. Its job is narrower: to preserve what was observed, which convention was used and which document supports the resulting label.
An unresolved input should remain unresolved in the record. For example, an unidentified active leaf is not a reason to choose the left leaf by default. A model number without an option suffix is not a complete statement about an option-specific restriction. Those are missing inputs, not new handing categories.
What does this page show, and what does it not show?
It compares published reference records, not the frequency of real-world practice. The 16-record set was selected for its relevance to the draft’s terminology and component questions; it is not a random sample or an exhaustive census. All original counts on this page refer to those disclosed records or their fields.
The conventions themselves are the industry’s, not ours. What is original here is the join: reference side, hinge and swing geometry, door label, alias, scoped closer label, active-leaf notation, component-level exceptions, model-code section and jurisdictional scope. The download retains the boundaries between those fields instead of presenting them as a single universal rule.
A source can be authoritative about its own product or wording without settling another manufacturer’s terminology. A historical catalog can document a historical option restriction without proving that today’s version is unchanged. An adoption page can identify an edition without deciding every alteration on every opening in its jurisdiction.
The compilation makes no claim to be the first such reference ever published anywhere. Its original contribution is the particular structured comparison, explicit normalization rules and inspectable records supplied here. Reconstructing a single manufacturer’s fact is different from reproducing the cross-source join; both remain traceable to their respective sources.
How was this reference assembled and checked?
The research records were checked on September 14, 2026, then normalized into one structured dataset used for the tables and downloads. Primary publisher documents support the technical statements; official code and agency records support the legal-reference fields. Directly inspected content is distinguished from issuer-indexed excerpts, and historical documents retain their own dates.
What we collected. The 16-reference comparison covers selected material from the Steel Door Institute, Allegion and its named brands, door/hardware distributors, and the ANSI/BHMA preparation preview. Additional records cover the four-case door-to-closer translation, active pairs, four LCN closer series, 13 hardware category/model entries, six IBC editions and eight jurisdiction/scope entries. The latter are eight rows of different scope—not eight independently adopted local building codes.
Where from, and when. Every retained source appears below with a primary-document URL, document vintage when established, evidence location and access note. September 14, 2026 is the verification date, not the publication date of every source. The quick-reference sheet is Rev. 10/14; the Steelcraft manual is Book Rev. 09/26/24; the historical Von Duprin example carries a 2004 copyright; and the SARGENT example is an October 2021 catalog.
How the comparison was selected. This is a purposive set of records addressing the specific handing-confusion questions in the page. Two SDI sections and multiple Allegion documents are retained as separate records because their document formats and terminology are being compared. They are not treated as independent publishers or used to estimate market share, practice frequency or a probability of making an error.
How it was processed. Reference side, hinge side and travel direction are separate fields. Aliases are joined by the matching configuration in the cited charts, not by similar spelling alone. The handed-closer translation stays attached to the Allegion convention. Product records retain the model, function, option, component and vintage necessary to prevent a narrow statement from becoming an unsupported category-wide rule.
How the original counts were calculated. The two inversions are counted from the four door-to-closer records. The five instruction formulations are a controlled coding of the instructions recorded in Table 4. The five non-reverse and four reverse terms are distinct normalized text values in the designated terminology arrays. None of these counts measures installed doors, prevalence, purchase failures or the number of official industry standards.
Verification tiers. ★ means the relevant primary text, table or diagram was read directly. ● means the published field was checked against an indexed excerpt of the primary document while full retrieval was restricted or exceeded the reader’s size limit. An excerpt-level record is not represented as a full-document audit. It contains only what the accessible primary evidence supports.
Access limits, disclosed. The Steelcraft PDF’s complete contents exceeded the reading tool’s size limit; the recorded terminology and viewpoint came from its primary-document excerpts. The ICC edition entries were checked through issuer-indexed section excerpts, not complete purchased code books. St. Louis County’s current index was accessible at excerpt level, while the separate county-produced ordinance convenience copy was read directly. That copy labels itself unofficial and is not presented as certified codification.
Images were treated as evidence. SDI’s chart labels and BROSCO’s commercial graphic were inspected instead of being marked absent because they were not ordinary body text. Manufacturer PDF pages were inspected for the historical SARGENT and Von Duprin records and the PHG product specifications. The page does not reproduce those publishers’ artwork or claim an original diagram that is not supplied.
What the build checks. The included script verifies four-case coverage, the expected door/closer mapping, four active-pair records, the 16-reference count, the controlled term counts, all 16 LCN component entries and source-ID resolution. It regenerates the page’s data tables and CSV/JSON exports from the same records, checks internal anchor targets and download files, and verifies that the visible FAQ answers match their structured-data answers. Those are internal consistency checks, not a second physical inspection or product certification.
What refresh means. A future verification date should follow a real source review. A product revision, corrected chart caption, code adoption or source relocation can change a record; changing a calendar year alone cannot. A dated edition remains identifiable in the download path, and a substantive revision should receive a new edition rather than quietly overwriting the old findings.
What are the limits of this chart and its data?
This page identifies documented handing terminology. It does not determine whether a particular opening, hardware combination or proposed alteration is approved for its application. Product suitability, listing conditions and project-specific code acceptance require the applicable documents and responsible authorities; a label translation does not resolve them.
Specific exclusions and boundaries:
- Overhead and rolling doors are outside scope. This is a reference for the stated swinging pedestrian-door configurations. It does not classify sectional, rolling, high-speed-door or operator handedness, and it does not claim that those products lack their own handing terminology.
- The closer crosswalk is scoped to the cited convention. It is not a universal part-selection rule for non-handed bodies, concealed or floor closers, automatic operators, arms, covers or every mounting arrangement. Those products and configurations require their own documentation.
- Product rows describe named components and document versions. The four-series matrix describes the cited LCN comparison. The 2004 Von Duprin and 2021 SARGENT examples remain historical, and the undated PHG/trim extracts do not establish that every later variant is identical.
- Reference counts are not field statistics. The page contains no observed rate of wrong orders, no cost study and no count of installed doors by hand. It does not claim that no such dataset could exist elsewhere; none was collected for this project.
- Charts can be revised. The QualityDoor caption conflict and Special-Lite wording conflict are dated observations of particular pages. A later correction changes the live evidence and should be reflected in a new verification pass.
- Legal coverage is narrow. The code table records the identified model-code provision, not every exception or local amendment. The jurisdiction table does not assign one edition to all Missouri buildings, every St. Louis County municipality or every Illinois county. The County index and ICC records have the excerpt-level limitations stated in the methodology.
- Unassigned fields are not guessed. The comparison does not fill Steelcraft’s uninspected pair coverage, declare a first-ever introduction date for balanced-door wording, or assign handing behavior to unexamined hinges, electric strikes, electromagnetic locks, thresholds or gasketing. A related standard alone would not establish that behavior.
- Other national conventions and special assemblies are not classified. The reference does not translate DIN or other international systems. Both-active, double-egress and other special openings are identified as separate cases rather than forced into the single-active-leaf table.
What other commercial door handing questions does this reference answer?
The answers below use the same reference side, component boundaries and document dates as the tables. A short answer should not silently discard the condition that makes it correct.
What does “reverse” mean in door handing?
In this chart, the leaf swings toward the observer on the designated outside/key side. Reverse, reverse swing and reverse bevel describe that matching condition in the cited records; “outward” is meaningful only when the reference side is stated. Is LHR the same as LHRB?
In the cited commercial charts, yes: LHR and LHRB describe matching left-hinge/reverse-swing geometry from the same reference side. Allegion uses LHR; Imperial USA uses LHRB. The alias does not establish product compatibility or field reversibility. Sources: Allegion (S06); Imperial USA (S11).
Can I determine handing from the hinge side alone?
No. The full four-hand result requires a designated reference side, hinge position as seen from that side, and whether the leaf travels toward or away. A left/right result alone does not distinguish non-reverse from reverse. Sources: Allegion (S03); Allegion (S06).
Why does an RHR door take an LH closer?
Under Allegion’s cited handed-closer convention, the key-side door classification and push-side closer classification use opposite faces on a reverse opening. RHR maps to LH and LHR maps to RH. This is a label crosswalk, not a universal closer-selection rule. Sources: Allegion (S03).
Which leaf determines the handing of a pair?
For the conventional one-active-leaf pair covered here, use the designated active leaf and the notation LHA, RHA, LHRA or RHRA. Does a non-handed lock mean the opening is non-handed?
